Sound masking works when the emitters are placed near the listener. A sound masking system placed inside a server room will not mask the sound. If a space experiences high volume from nearby server room, a sound masking system placed in that room may help reduce the noise level.

- ABSORB – This involves the use of acoustic tiles, sound insulating wall materials, artwork or tapestries to help absorb sound.
- BLOCK – In some cases sound insulation can be achieved through specific placement and style of building materials like walls, doors, glass, and insulation.
- COVER – Through the use of sound masking, artificial sound, music, television, or a fan in your space, you can cover sound with other noise to distract you from the originating sound.
